by Anshuman Mirani

When one thinks of innovation and initiative in the field of agricultural products, one of the first names that come to mind is Monsanto Co.

Although a relatively new company, Monsanto is the world leader in developing solutions for agriculture, based on advanced science and innovative technology. These solutions are designed to improve food production and quality while respecting the environment as well as regional and cultural diversity. They provide agricultural solutions and tools for growers worldwide with agricultural herbicides, other weed management products, and a strong portfolio of commercialized agricultural crops improved using biotechnology.

Monsanto is a visionary, a force that has made its presence felt worldwide, working to bring state-of-the-art science and an environmentally responsible outlook to the solution of humanity's pressing problems. Whether one is concerned about population growth, the future of agriculture, the quality of our food, or the health needs of an aging population, we are assured that Monsanto will find the answers.

History
Monsanto is a relatively new company. Although they share a name and history with a different company founded in 1901, this recently created corporation has a very special focus on developing agricultural solutions.
The old Monsanto entered into a merger and changed its name to Pharmacia Company. The new Monsanto was incorporated as a subsidiary of Pharmacia in 2000, and spun off as a separate company in 2002. In the 21st century, they have committed themselves to innovation in plant biotechnology, genomics and breeding to improve productivity and to reduce the costs of farming.
