Water Magic

by Soumya Lipsa Rath

Water derived from an Old English word Waeter and from a German word Wasser is one of the vital elements for almost all living organism (Jeev). Life originated on Earth due to water and many lives on Earth are taken away by water.

This able physician has a tonic for almost every disease. This dangerous villain can be a source for many diseases as well. This odorless, tasteless solvent is responsible for relatively constant temperature on Earth (Gaia hypothesis)

How would you feel when a person desperately comes to you for water? Now imagine a crowd of some hundreds and thousands rushing to you from drought-affected areas. Imagine places where people buy water like any other commodity. This is an eerie condition and we have made it. We know life on earth exists due to water, life originated due to water. Now if large mammals like us are so severely affected by water scarcity what becomes the conditions of other microbes and minor organisms?

We all know Earth is 3/4th water then how does water become scarce? We consume some fractions of 3% of fresh water found on Earth. 68.7% of which are ice and glaciers and 0.3% are surface waters (lakes, swamps and rivers). 30.1% of fresh water is the ground water, which we actually put to use.

We are endlessly using this water for numerous processes like washing, in industries, etc. This wastewater is not put to some justifiable use. Thus water becomes another non- renewable source of energy for us

Water availability at a region varies from time to time. Like the one time greenery Rajasthan has turned out to be a desert. Drought and floods are now encountered in regions where there was no danger. These are not natural calamities but the man-made calamities according to me. When we have made a lock we have a key for it too. We have! We just have to find it.

"Save water, save water" we must have heard a number of times. But who is going to thank us for that? Who will know what we have done for the society? The answer is the act will come as a blessing in disguise for every individual consuming water. And if we are conscious individuals it is never too late for us act. We can save water by:

Whoop now that’s a small list! But we can make still newer innovations like one in South India, farmers made a provision for a leak such that one drop of water falls every minute for every plant. There was no need to water them regularly and large wastage of water was saved.

People are now becoming more conscious. Industries have made provision for recycling of industrial wastewaters. Primary among them is the paper industry, which makes it a point to recycle and reuse water for subsequent paper production.

People in Desert areas have set up some rainwater conserving tanks. Rain waters absorbed in the sandy soil can easily drain to these tanks. These tanks conserve water and filter them so that during necessity they can be consumed effectively.

Trees, our friends are lovely source for supplying us humid conditions, for maintaining the water cycle, for rains, etc. Cutting them not only allows water to fall directly to the ground and cause soil pollution but also invites floods due to no checkpoints. The continuous, regular water cycle also retains the atmospheric temperature.

A very important danger other than flood is water pollution. The acidified waters which can cause varying number of diseases among individuals. Ignorant people are not quite aware of the danger but we have to be and we have to make them aware of the drastic consequences like lead poisoning.

Another rectification we can make for our benefit is keeping the beaches clean because harmful microbes don’t dislike a dirty environment and beaches are places where they can easily find their preys. Similar is the case with swimming pools, which require regular chlorination and cleaning.

Some action we can make from our conscience for some we have to rely but as far as possible we should start early before we start drinking harmful water and poison ourselves.
