Energy
concerns are mounting and the avenue of alternative sources needs exploration
at the earliest. Oil prices being on a rise and the quantities being deplorably
low, this concern has to be addressed immediately.
The dependence of vehicles
on conventional fuels cannot be perpetuated for long. The search for a cheap,
easily available source of energy, to ease the woes of the transportation
fuel section, leads us to the best possible answer: Solar
Energy.
Tropical countries like India receive considerable amounts
of solar insolation, and hence this energy source has extensive prospects.
"Project Solaris" is an ambitious
attempt in the same direction. Looking towards using solar energy for powering
vehicles, this is indeed a remarkable step in furthering the cause of solar
energy and energy conservation.
With the efficiency of solar cells improving
with every passing year, it may not be long before the technology is incorporated
into conventional vehicles.
The team plans to pit their Solar Car against their counterparts from all over the world thus representing India on the global platform by way of the Panasonic- World Solar Challenge.
It is a matter of immense pride that such an initiative is being undertaken at Delhi College of Engineering, and rightfully so, for Delhi College of Engineering has always served as a womb to innovation.
