Delhi: January 31, 2011: More and more engineering institutions and B-schools are encouraging their students to take up entrepreneurship, post education. However, Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, today at TEDxDTU motivated its budding engineers to go a step ahead and take up social entrepreneurship, which is developing enterprises for the benefit of society. An internationally acclaimed event TEDx (where x=independently organized TED event) works on the concept of spreading ‘the power of idea’ through motivational videos and live talks by committed individuals who are involved in social enterprises.
Organized by the Entrepreneurship Cell of the University, the theme of TEDxDTU was “Celebrating the spirit of Social Entrepreneurship - Driven with the vision to create better ways to help people grow”. Inaugurating the event, which was held against a specially created rural backdrop within the University auditorium, Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU said, “Pooling of mind is important in this new Knowledge Age. We all may know something but none of us knows everything, hence it is important to share your ideas and knowledge with each other for creating fair prosperity and happiness in plenty for all.”
Through her presentation, Ms. Saloni Malhotra, co-founder of DesiCrew and MTV Youth Icon 2008, shared as to how creating enterprises within a rural community goes beyond just providing employment to village dwellers and benefits the community in a much larger way. While sharing her experiences of working at almost inaccessible places like Char, Executive Director, Friendship, Ms. Runa Khan emphasized that in order to aid a community it is important to first identify their basic need and then try to serve that particular requirement.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Jagdeep S. Chhokar, former Professor of IIM Ahmedabad remarked, “Social entrepreneurs create capital for society. Thinking out of box and that too in socially relevant areas is important to trigger social entrepreneurship and make societies better, across the world.” Other eminent speakers at TEDxDTU included Mr. Anshu Gupta, Executive Director, Goonj, who has been working on the concept of ‘changing one person’s waste into other person’s requirement’, Mr. Pradeep S Mehta, Founder Secretary General, Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS International) and Mr. Arvind Saraf, Co-founder, Swasth India, among others. A special message by Mr. Suhel Seth, Managing Partner of Counselage India and Chairman of the National Marketing Committee of both CII and FICCI for 2010-11 was also relayed on the occasion, besides TED Talk Video of Mrs. Melinda Gates. The day came to an end with a rib-tickling performance by Stand-Up Comedian Mr. Nitin Das and dance by Mr. Harihar Dash, finalist of India’s Got Talent II.
