Workshop on "Pattern Recognition and Soft Computing "

Delhi:
July 9, 2010: A five-day workshop on ‘Pattern Recognition and Soft Computing’ organized by the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering of Delhi Technological University (DTU) culminated today at the University campus. Held from July 5-9, 2010, the workshop was inaugurated by Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU along with Dr. C.P. Ravi Kumar, Director (R&D) Texas Instrument, in the presence of Prof. Rajiv Kapoor, Head of Electronics & Communication Engineering Deptt., DTU.

The workshop concluded today with a valedictory session presided by the Vice Chancellor. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sharma remarked that this kind of workshop is in tune with the need of country regarding video surveillance of unmanned aerial and ground vehicle especially in border and terrorist affected areas. Addressing the participants, he said, “Privilege to serve and privilege to excel should be your guiding philosophy. When you go back to your respective institutions/ organizations, talk about this workshop and share the knowledge you have gained here with your students and colleagues – this is privilege to serve. Privilege to excel – is being excited about your work and try to do better in your teaching, research and other activities to excel in your respective field.” Dr. Madhusudan Singh, Principal Scientist, Hi-Tech Robotics was also present on the occasion.

The workshop focused on the basic pattern recognition problem which is important for a large number of applications related to speech, power quality, video analysis, text & content based video processing. These applications require intelligent methods of classification of data. According to Prof. Kapoor, “The three major objectives behind organizing this workshop were imparting knowledge about the pattern recognition and the technologies concerned; on the innovative engineering technologies like neural network, Fuzzy logic and Genetic algorithm for speech & video applications; and on embedding the application in the electronics hardware for a better product design deployable at the sight.”

Eminent experts from industry and top academic institutions delivered lectures and conducted lab sessions at the workshop to give hands-on-experience to the participants including Dr. Kumar from Texas, Prof. K.K. Biswas from IIT Delhi, Prof. Sukumar Mishra from IIT Delhi, Prof. Harish Parthasarthi from Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology,  Dr. Singh from Hi-Tech  Robotics, Prof. Kapoor from DTU and Prof. Moinuddin, Director, NIT Jallandhar. The experts covered the issues related to pattern recognition techniques, soft computing techniques and their application, specifically in the field of robotics & surveillance.

The workshop was attended by about 60 faculty members, research scholars, scientists and students from various engineering Institutions, DRDO and Industries. All the participants were given certificates at the end of the workshop.
